Catalogue from the 1992 Barbican, London exhibition, ‘William Eggleston-Colour Photographs Ancient and Modern.
The exhibition showed William Eggleston’s portfolio, Graceland, which documents Elvis Presley’s Memphis mansion, presenting the exaggerated décor of the King’s tomb in a series of colour photographs of vibrant intensity.
Industrial studies and lyrical images of flowers and vegetation are also included from Eggleston’s travels through Kenya, Egypt and the Transvaal. The exhibition concluded with the powerful series Kiss Me Kracow, showing images of Vienna, Salzburg and Berlin prior to the destruction of the Wall, and Eggleston’s most recent series, taken in Britain, in which he explores the centres of English tradition from Cambridge to the City of London.
