The office is one of our most common workplaces. A common working environment, yet rarely attracting attention. Photographically, working life is often depicted in visually and emotionally charged settings – industry, shipping, farming, prisons, hospitals, psychiatric institutions etc. For Lars Tunbjörk (1956 - 2015), growing up in a lower middle class environment, depicting his roots was a natural step. After the critically acclaimed book Landet Utom Sig (Country Beside Itself ) focusing on public space and leisure activities in Sweden, he wished to create a sequel depicting work.

At first he photographed several small and large companies and state establishments in Sweden. But with expanding globalization he felt it restrictive to visit Swedish offices only. Thus he sought out places of significant importance to international trade, such as Tokyo and New York’s Wall Street.
