Description:

Third American Edition. Aperture, 1978. Hardcover in pictorial dust jacket. Third American Edition (preceded only by Grove Press, 1958 and Grossman/Aperture, 1969).

The Americans by Robert Frank Aperture Monograph, 1978 “The Americans” by Robert Frank is considered one of the seminal works in American photography and art. This is the 1978 Aperture Monograph that significantly revised and expanded the original edition and includes a wonderful introduction by Jack Kerouac. The photographs in this volume were taken by Robert Frank on a grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation in 1955. He embarked on a two year journey across America compiling some 28,000 shots. What he saw and recorded was a world largely unimagined by the serious photographers of his day-a grab-bag of roadside ephemera, neon signs, fast service cafes, gloomy bars and grim, haunting street crowds. From these 28,000 shots,83 were selected for publication in this remarkable book. The book is black cloth over boards with the title blind stamped in black to the front panel and in silver gilt to the spine.
